Hi, I'm Jessica. I appreciate fiction in its many shapes and forms.

I NEEDED THIS IN MY LIFE OH MY GOD GUYS
Neville is a perfect example of how one single ingredient in the recipe can either ruin your casserole (or stew, or treacle tart, whatever you like), or utterly perfect your whole dish. Neville is the tide-turner, the shiny hinge. And all because he happens to be in the same position as Wormtail… but makes all the hard choices that Pettigrew refused the first time around. Other characters are in similar positions, but none of them go so far as Neville. None of them prove that the shaping of destiny is all on the individual the way he does.
This is SO cool!
In The Hunger Games, Katniss talks about herself and her home, and when she’s not talking about her past, she’s evaluating everything—she wishes she had done things, there are things she doesn’t know, and things are wrong. Pretty accurate summary of Katniss’s thought process.
In Twilight, we get a lot of actions, but these actions are representative of the power in Bella and Edward’s relationship: Bella sighs, shrugs, laughs, and (most importantly), flinches, while Edward’s distinguishing action is to not answer. His most common actions include withholding information.
In Harry Potter, Harry does a lot of simple actions that give off a more observational tone…which is accurate. Harry’s kinda clueless a lot of the time. Part of why we love him so much.
Also, if you look at the sentence variety, Collins’s and Rowling’s are shapely and mixed. Can’t say the same for Meyer.
Two beloved literary icons enter.
Only one will leave.
This is the cruelest poll ever.
I voted for Harry Potter. (It wasn’t even a particularly tough choice for me.)
HP is the most important story for a generation of readers and is one of the central reasons that my career even exists, so it’s a bit silly even to be in the ring with it here at the end.
Of course, the whole idea of a poll of Internet voters deciding the best YA novel of all time is also a little silly. But I am nonetheless very honored to have TFIOS around at the end, and thankful to all those who’ve read and shared it the past 22 months.
But yeah. Harry. Obviously.
(I voted for Harry Potter too)
